Most of what we print is named after a place within a couple of hours of where we live. Here is where four of them are.
Willow Slough
Willow Slough Fish and Wildlife Area is in Newton County, built around J.C. Murphey Lake. The daily waterfowl drawing starts at 4:30 a.m., and everybody stands around in the dark waiting on a number.
The Kankakee
Before the ditches and the dredges, the Grand Kankakee Marsh covered something like half a million acres across northern Indiana. The river was straightened and dredged between the 1880s and 1917, and most of that water is farmland now. The Waterfowl Division is named for what was there.
Winamac
Winamac Fish & Wildlife Area, in Pulaski County, is where the state stocks roosters each November for reserved put-and-take pheasant hunts. Rooster only, two a day.
Mount Baldy
Mount Baldy is the big bare dune at the east end of Indiana Dunes National Park, and it is still moving. It is why the Lakeshore Division looks the way it does.
More stories from these places are coming. If there is one you want us to tell, send it along.
